Dante Gabriel Rossetti
British, 1828 - 1882
This watercolour shows the Blessed Virgin receiving the message of the Archangel Gabriel
in a rose garden. It is a preliminary study for two oil panels on the pulpit of St Mark's Church, Scarborough,
a Gothic Revival edifice designed by Rossetti's close friend, the architect George Frederick
Bodly (1827-1907), who commissioned the work.
